Histopathology reports have confirmed that television actor Pratyusha Banerjee was pregnant and underwent a medical termination of pregnancy before she committed suicide, but police officers have said investigations into her death showed no link between her pregnancy and the suicide.
According to a report submitted by state-run JJ Hospital to the police, Banerjee underwent an abortion shortly before her suicide. The hospital’s dean Dr T P Lahane, however, refused to comment. “Since it is a medico-legal case, we cannot disclose anything. We have submitted our findings to the police,” he said.
Meanwhile, an official from the Forensic Sciences Laboratory said that they received samples such as nail cuticles and vaginal swabs in connection with the Pratyusha suicide case. “The DNA division is carrying out tests on the samples received in the Pratyusha case,” an official said.

He added that they would look below nail cuticles to check whether there were DNA remains there, which would indicate a scuffle. The vaginal swab would be tested to rule out sexual assault.
Investigators probing the suicide of the TV actress, who shot to fame after acting in a daily soap Balika Vadhu, have confirmed that they were made aware of Banerjee’s abortion, but did not consider it “a factor to be probed”.
“The preliminary inquiry has revealed that Banerjee underwent a legitimate abortion. Her boyfriend Rahul Raj Singh informed us that he went along with her to a Goregaon-based gynaecologist for the abortion, two months before she took her life. Singh claimed the duo took the decision together as they were not equipped financially to have a child at that moment. We have corroborated Singh’s statements with the gynaecologist’s and also have a copy of the medical records,” said an investigator.
Senior officers denied that the abortion had any role to play in Banerjee’s suicide and ruled out that it was a reason for booking Singh for abetment.
“The abortion is not our line of investigation. There were several other stressors on Banerjee that led her to take the extreme step,” said a senior police officer.
