Neeraj Pandey’s “M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story”, a biopic on cricket icon Mahendra Singh Dhoni, will now release on September 30 instead of September 2. The makers took the decision to present the film in the “best way”.

“It was a unanimous decision to release the film on September 30. This would give the team some more time to present the film to the audiences in the best way. We in no way wanted to compromise on the visual experience that Neeraj Pandey is set to create with this movie,” Vijay Singh, CEO, Fox Star Studios, said in a statement.

The film stars actor Sushant Singh Rajput in the title role. Its makers are confident that more time will only help in maximising the effect of the movie.

In order to create the perfect world of Mohenjo Daro, filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker got in touch with several archaeologists who helped him in his research for the movie.

Starring Hrithik Roshan and newcomer Pooja Hegde, the movie is set in the ancient city of Mohenjo Daro in the era of the Indus Valley civilisation.

“This was a make believe world so when I started my research, during the initial phase, I came across Jonathan Mark Kenoyer’s books Ancient India: Land of Mystery and Excavations at Mohenjo Daro. I immediately got in touch with Kenoyer, Dept of Anthropology, University of Wisconsin, to seek his assistance,” Gowariker said in a statement.

“He has worked at the Mohenjo Daro excavation site for the past 35 years. To my good fortune, he agreed to help me realise the true potential of the story on film,” he said.

The Jodha Akbar helmer said he was then suggested names of various individuals who could give him inputs on the undeciphered Sindhu script, culture, the town planning and any and every other aspect surrounding the era.

Gowariker shot the film in Bhuj, Kutch and had to keep in mind certain facts to give authenticity to the film.

The 52-year-old director shared instances like how the architecture was basic, with the tallest house in Mohenjo Daro just two-storey tall, and since there was no iron used, all the tools, implements and weapons were made of flint stone.

The filmmaker said even though gold was just discovered in that era, precious stones like Carnelian beads, Steatite beads, and many other river stones were used in ornamentation.

He said another thing they kept in mind was that there was barter system in the era and there was no currency of any kind.

Mohenjo Daro is set to release on August 12.

Mamta Kulkarni was opposite Salman Khan in Karan Arjun, starred with Aamir Khan in Baazi, was paired with Akshay Kumar in Waqt Humara Hai and cast as Saif Ali Khan’s leading lady in his debut, Aashiq Awara.

Yet, 24 years since she made her debut in Hindi cinema with Tirangaa (1992), she remains nearly forgotten, only to be remembered when a news report alleging her involvement in a drug cartel begins to do rounds, as happened late last week.

But then, Kulkarni isn’t new to controversy. Her brief decade-long career in Bollywood was dotted with several. At a time when modesty was the greatest, most-valued virtue of a Bollywood leading lad, Kulkarni dared to lock lips with Akshay Kumar in Sabse Bada Khiladi and (in)famously went topless for a magazine cover.

“It was brave and also scandalous,” recounts Shakti Kapoor, who played the baddie in several films she worked in. While there were also other names, such as Kimi Katkar, who seemed comfortable with their sexuality on screen, Kulkarni emerged as one of the more popular faces of the time.

Watch Video: What’s making news

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=videoseries&w=640&h=390]

A director who once worked with her but did not wish to be named, says one of the reasons was her age. She was all of 19 when she made her debut in the Telugu film industry, with Donga Police (1991).

“She was a young, new face, with oodles of sex appeal and a candour to match it all,” he says, explaining her entry into the Hindi film industry. “Plus she was a Marathi mulgi from Bombay.”

This particular fact about her has worked both in her favour and against. While no one confirms it, Kulkarni, it is believed, comes from a middle-class family. Her father was with the RTO.

She lived with her parents and two sisters in Andheri East until she moved to Yari Road many years later. Due to her modest upbringing, Kulkarni, unlike many of her contemporaries, did not speak fluent English. But Kapoor says that kept her grounded.

“She was very sweet and quiet. We would often eat together on the sets and she had no airs although she enjoyed success at an early age.”

Though she was not known for her acting talent, her dancing skills, candid speak and confidence fetched her the roles. It also fetched her the sneers and rumours regarding her link-ups with actors and directors would often do rounds.

The one that is particularly remembered is with filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi, who cast her for a song in Sunny Deol-starrer Ghatak and followed it up by offering her the lead role in China Gate. However, once the shoot began, Kulkarni was reportedly unceremoniously ousted from the role. While at the time, the actor alleged that Santoshi had made inappropriate advances, according to some, the director had apparently grown jealous of his leading lady’s closeness to the fight director Tinu Verma.

It was reported that a call from underworld don Chhota Rajan got her back into the film but the damage had been done and her name linked to the dark world of crime. So how did a simple Maharashtrian girl get caught up with the underworld? This is where her now-husband and drug lord Vicky Goswami steps in.

According to reports in the past, Goswami was one of the biggest drug manufacturers based in South Africa, with close links to the Mumbai underworld and Bollywood. A vulnerable Kulkarni is believed to have fell for him.

“It was early 2000s. At the time, her career was fading off and she was getting drawn to spirituality. Vicky tapped these aspects and she fell in love,” says an old-school Bollywood producer.

Although in an exclusive 2012 interview to a freelance Indian journalist, Kulkarni claims that she vanished from Mumbai to pursue the “path shown by my spiritual guru”, there are reports that claim she had moved to Dubai to get Goswami released from the prison where he was serving life sentence, and later to Nairobi.

While most believe that Kulkarni has been leading the high life, the former actress, in these years, even released an e-book on spirituality, based on the teachings of her guru whose ashram is somewhere near Haridwar.

Based on that 2012 interview, which is available online, Kulkarni claims to have never married, adopted the spiritual path and turned into an ascetic, even as she continues to love and believe in the innocence of Goswami.

kathakali-movie-poster_759 The Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA), a body of Malayalam film directors and technician, on Monday staged a dharna in front of the regional office of the CBFC here.

At a time when the controversy surrounding Bollywood film Udta Punjab has stirred up the censorship debate, the Malayalam film industry is caught in a tussle with the regional office of Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) over the denial of certificate to Kathakali on grounds of nudity.

The Film Employees’ Federation of Kerala (FEFKA), a body of Malayalam film directors and technicians, staged a dharna on Monday in front of CBFC’s regional office. FEFKA general secretary and B Unnikrishnan said the censor board was indulging in politics and added that they would move the high court against the board’s decision. “The CBFC is treating filmmakers as if we have committed a grave sin,” he said.

The two-hour film on the life of a Kathakali artiste is directed by Sijo Kannanaikkal. Recently, the CBFC asked for three cuts to be “sanctioned for unrestricted public exhibition”.

The board wants the removal of a scene in which the protagonist Dasan is undressed and beaten up and another towards the end in which Dasan removes the Kathakali attire and walks towards the Bharathapuzha river. It also wants the cuss words removed.

Young filmmaker Sijo is of the view that the scenes in question were the soul of the movie and added that the CBFC was infringing upon creative freedom. “What would be left in the film if the climax is removed,” he asked.

CBFC regional officer Dr A Prathibha has called the protest a publicity stunt. Stating that the director has not replied to the board’s notice, she said the filmmakers were protesting without knowing the regulations.

Did Salman Khan really say gruelling Sultan shoots made him ‘feel like a raped woman’ in an interview?

This is not the first time Sultan star Salman Khan has landed in a soup for his comments and sense of humour, and as usual there aren’t many who can palate it.

Salman has been giving a slew of interviews as part of the promotions for his upcoming film Sultan, in which he plays a wrestler along with co-star Anushka Sharma. But one such interview has people up in arms about several comments he made about women, especially one in which he compared feeling like a raped woman after his hectic wrestling shoots.

Also read: What Salman Khan said immediately after the ‘raped woman’ comment went conveniently unreported

In the interview, Salman was asked about his gruelling shooting schedule, to which he has been quoted to have answered: “While shooting, during those six hours, there’d be so much of lifting and thrusting on the ground involved. That was tough for me because if I was lifting, I’d have to lift the same 120-kilo guy 10 times for 10 different angles. And likewise, get thrown that many times on the ground. This act is not repeated that many times in the real fights in the ring. When I used to walk out of the ring, after the shoot, I used to feel like a raped woman. I couldn’t walk straight. I would eat and then, head right back to training. That couldn’t stop.”

Predictably, his statement “…When I used to walk out of the ring, after the shoot, I used to feel like a raped woman…” resulted in much outrage on social media platforms, such as Twitter.

Another comment that did not go down well was when he called women a vice, akin to alcohol and cigarettes. In answer to a question on sacrifices for one’s career, Salman is quoted to have said: “Leave every second vice in your list – that’s the mantra I follow. And I have left everything one by one. When it was between coffee and cigarettes, I quit coffee. Between cigarettes and drinks, I quit the stick. Between the drinks and women, I have chosen women.”

It seemed like Spotboye had an exclusive one on one with Salman, but it was actually a group interaction as has come to light in an audio recording of the event, where Salman made the comments.

There are some, though, who have come out in support of the Dabangg actor, saying that he made those comments lightheartedly, without malice and that he has been ‘misquoted’/taken out of context.

We have not yet come across an official statement from Khan, but watch this space for further developments.

Salman Khan, often called Bollywood’s enfant terrible, finds himself in hot waters owing to a statement that he retracted seconds after he made it. Here’s what happened.

There were a series of interviews lined up for the Sultan actor on Saturday evening (June 18) last week at Mehboob Studios in Mumbai. Almost 50 journalists were present to interview the star, and press interactions were divided in groups/batches.

It was in the second group interaction that Salman blurted out the rape comment. It was in response to a question on the hectic shooting schedule for his upcoming film in which he plays a wrestler.

While talking about the wrestling shots, Salman narrated how he had to pick up a man weighing 120 kg almost 10 times for five different camera angles. According to the actor, this routine went on for six to seven hours. “It is like the most difficult thing,” he said Salman, explaining what it was like when he walked out of the ring after the hectic shoot schedule. These are his exact words: “When I used to walk out of that ring, it used to be actually like a raped woman walking out.”

At this point – as can be heard in an audio file of the interaction in possession with IndianExpress.com – journalists present can be heard erupting into a slight chatter and laughter at the statement. It was clear the actor had made a faux pas. Realising that he shouldn’t have made a comparison to a rape victim, Salman added, “I don’t think I should have.”

Salman then proceeded to make sure he finished saying what he had in mind. “It feels like the most difficult….I couldn’t take steps. I couldn’t take steps.”

In an interview that has subsequently gone viral, the last two statements by Salman – spoken immediately after his ‘raped woman’ comment – went unreported, and that is where the social media uproar began.

There is no denying that the Dabangg actor made the comment – whether he should have at all, is another debate altogether, but he immediately saw the error in it and retracted it.

Actor Jimmy Shergil, who has managed to carve a niche for himself in Bollywood with variety of roles, says it was a conscious decision not repeating himself in chocolate-boy roles.

In his career spanning over two decades now, Jimmy was initially seen in romantic roles in films Mohabbatein, Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai, after which he went on to do varied roles and gave power packed performances in Haasil, Munna Bhai MBBS, Yahaan, Saheb Biwi Gangster, A Wednesday and recently in Tanu Weds Manu franchise.

“I am busy working today and I am more happy about that. It was a conscious decision to not to go back to chocolate boy roles. I don’t want to get stuck to any image,” Jimmy told PTI.

“I am glad I did that (not stuck to one kind of role) as I got the opportunity to do something different like Haasil, Munna Bhai MBBS, A Wednesday and others. These roles got me lot of appreciation,” he said.

The Special 26 star says if he gets to do meaty role in a multi-starrer project, length of the character does not bother him much.

“I do solo films as well. But if I am getting to play meaty roles in an ensemble film then why not do it. I want to do good memorable roles I don’t look at the length of the character,” the 45-year-old actor said.

“Whatever I am today it is because of the film industry. I have no regrets. I take it as a compliment when people ask me if I have got my due or not.”

Jimmy says he is grateful for all the love and support that he has got from the industry.

“I don’t think there is any formula. I have always been honest to my work. It’s my conscious decision to not get slotted in one kind of image,” he said.

Jimmy will be next seen in playing a politician in Shorgul and is quite excited about the film.

“It is a fictitious character. The film is inspired from lot of incidents that has happened in our society.”

The upcoming political thriller drama is directed by Pranav Kumar Singh and Jitendra Tiwari.

It is reportedly loosely based on 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots.

“The story is very appealing…it was something I had not done before. It’s an interesting love story and politics is the backdrop of it,” he said.

Starring Jimmy, Ashutosh Rana, Suha Gezen, Narendra Jha, Anirudh Dave and Sanjay Suri in lead roles, the film is set to release on June 24.

“We have sold a lot of celebrity hair in the past but never any of David Bowie’s. This is pretty unique. It is difficult to predict how much it will go for but we recently sold some of John Lennon’s hair, which was snipped from his head by his barber, for a huge sum,” auctioneer Margaret Barrett said.

“David Bowie has now passed away and fans are devastated by the news so we are expecting to get a lot of interest in the sale.”

Bids on the lock of hair are now open, ahead of the sale on June 25.

Hrithik appeared rustic and fierce as promised through the first look of the film, which also features Pooja Hegde, Kabir Bedi and Arunoday Singh in key roles.

At a time when most trailers are launched at events, Mohenjo Daro team initiated a new marketing move and opted to unveil it through a global GEC (General Entertainment Channel) roadblock.
