The ever calm & composed
Sunny Leone gives a thumbs up to adult comedies & why
As a storm of support gains a momentum of epic proportions post her much talked and tweeted about interview on television recently, Sunny Leone eases back and sounds the way she always does, calm and composed.
“Journalists ask all kinds of questions, and those who know me, know that I am a calm person and would enver let somebody get the best of me,” she connects for a quick chat from Mumbai.
Still ‘digesting’ the turn of events, Sunny Leone confesses she was pretty surprised with the support from the industry. “I thought it would go in the opposite direction, because sitting there, giving that interview on news channel, I have honestly never felt so alone and upset, with no one to protect me or help me. Women are intuitive creatures, and I had the feeling of where the interview was heading, and that he wanted to elicit a response that would make me sad, angry or feel bad about the choices I’ve made. I wasn’t going to back down or let him make me a victim,” says Sunny Leone who, at that moment was worried whether she’d given the right answers or was informative enough.

In any case, forget the steamy porn star tag or her journey from Karenjit Kaur Vohra/Karanjit Malhotra to Sunny Leone or that her existence can amount to ‘moral corruption’ of society, right now, she is devoted to her upcoming film, Milap Zaveri’s Mastizaade.
From India’s first ‘porn-com’ Kya Kool Hain Hum 3 to Great Grand Masti and Mastizaade, it’s a year of adult comedies. ‘Crazy, naughty and a raunchy comedy of errors’ is what Mastizaade is projecting itself as. Penned by Zaveri and Mushtaq Sheikh, this one stars Vir Das, Tusshar Kapoor and Leone in a twin role. “I play twin sisters Lily Lele and Laila Lele. While Laila is an over-the-top me, glamourous, open minded, confident girl, Lily is the dorky nerdy twin who wears spectacles, has a bad haircut and stutters.” It’s a film she wanted to do purely because she wanted to explore comedy after Ragini MMS.

The fact that it’s an adult comedy replete with double entendres doesn’t perturb Leone. “I don’t understand why comedies are not looked at as performance oriented roles. For instance Jennifer Aniston looked wow in one of my favourite movies, Meet the Millers. She is sexy, smart and funny, and that’s what counts.”
Here’s a performing artist and astute businesswoman who maintains a zen-like persona, is at ease with her identity and feels no heat from other leading ladies.

According to Zaveri, who commented in an Indian Express interview ‘she is an A-lister who can give him a opening of Rs 9 crore on day one.’ According to Leone, there are no categories or boxes to tick mark, everything has to have one element – entertainment. “I did Mastizaade because it is genuinely funny. Also, I take up projects only when I am comfortable with the people I am working with, people who have a sense of humour and are open minded.”

When it comes to the adult genre, its existence doesn’t shock Leone. “Why can’t we have an adult genre? What is wrong with it? Why can’t adults have a night out without the kids and see a film or programme made for them? This is an age group who is smart enough to understand the difference between right or wrong, fiction and non-fiction, but unfortunately, we all get caught in different views. The bottomline is, if you don’t like it, don’t watch it.”
This year, Leone will also be seen in two serious films, One Night Stand and Baimaan Love. With the industry, that at one time was quite wary of an adult star among them, now waving a ‘shining Sunny’ flag, Leone smiles and says, “I am my biggest competition for this is my life and my journey alone.”
