Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman’s band NAFS has released a rendition of “Ghanan ghanan” from the 2001 film “Lagaan” along with a music video.

While the rendition of the popular track bears the sanctity of the original song, the arrangement gives it an out of the box feel.

Award-winning arranger and conductor Arjun Chandy from Dallas, who was specially commissioned and invited by Rahman to direct, conduct and write arrangements for NAFS, has intricately managed to weave the piece together lending an unimaginable choir sound to it.

“We hope that this rendition of the classic tune ‘Ghanan ghanan’ by A.R. Rahman provides a musical and visual treat to audiences in India and abroad. The goal of NAFS is to engage, inspire, and give exposure to the listener,” Chandy said in a statement.

Elements of natural sounds infused with vocals give it an edgy twist with xylophone like rhythm coupled with bell chords. The song juxtaposes the beauty of both Indian classical and Western music.

The music video projects two different spaces, that is the real world and the enigmatic world with neon visuals.

The video is produced by Qyuki, an online multi-channel network founded by Shekhar Kapur, Samir Bangara and Rahman, that enables creators to build their fan following by producing and distributing videos across Youtube and other networks.

Commenting on the new launch, Sagar Gokhale, network head of Qyuki, says: “As a multichannel network, the purpose is to connect with the millennial audience – that’s the youth – and this song and its video personify exactly that experience. The packaging of the song strikes a resonance with the youth and we hope that they enjoy the experience of sharing and listening to it”.

Bollywood actor Sunny Deol is gearing up for the release of Ghayal Once Again, a sequel to his 1990 hit film Ghayal. In an exclusive interview with IndianExpress.com, Sunny Deol discusses his sequel, playing the quintessential action hero and the troublesome censor board.

Ques: Why did it take so long for you to make a sequel of your hit film, Ghayal?

Sunny Deol: I most definitely wanted to make a sequel right away. I was aware of sequels then in the 90s. I was a great fan of Mel Gibson and Sylvester Stallone and their franchises like Rocky and Lethal Weapon. I too wanted to make a sequel but at that time there was no great trend of sequels in our industry. Also Raj (Rajkumar Santoshi) was not quite interested, and when the trend of sequels started, I didn’t have any story and talks with directors were also not fruitful. In the end, I was so adamant that I myself took it up. And the same took 25 long years. (Read: Salman has great respect for me: Sunny Deol)

Ques: What would you say is the USP of Ghayal Once Again?

Sunny Deol: The earnest, honesty and societal relevance that we portrayed in Ghayal, we have used the same elements in Ghayal Once Again too. Today in 2016, how despite the huge scientific and technological advancements where we as human beings stand and how our society has evolved is something that we have looked into. I have picked my character of Ajay Mehra and how he would exist and be relevant in today’s times. (Also read: ‘Ghayal Once Again’ relevant to youth, says Sunny Deol)

Ques: You are always seen as an action hero. Are you happy with this image?

Sunny Deol: I have never attempted to make or break any image. As an actor, I came to do cinema. I have always played characters which are positive and go-getters and yes, they would end up fighting for their rights and justice. It is the media that gave me this image of an action hero and later producers and directors started approaching me with such projects. But I am mostly known because of the section of films I have done and they have been well received story wise as well. (Read: Sunny Deol goes back to his roots with ‘Ghayal Once Again’)

Ques: You and Amrish Puri formed a great on-screen bond. How much do you miss an actor his stature today?

Sunny Deol: I miss him too much. He was a great human being .He was a versatile actor who could slip in seamlessly into any role given.

Ques: Your co-star of many films, Meenakshi Seshadri was in Mumbai last year. Did you meet her?

Sunny Deol: I didn’t get to meet her. I wanted her to do a little role in my movie. It would have been nice had she done it. But she didn’t have the time. She was here only for a brief period.

Ques: The censor board has been a thorn in the flesh of many filmmakers. What is your take?

Sunny Deol: The censor board has always been like this. Nothing has changed. It is just that it has erupted now. It has always been there. Unfortunately, this is how our country functions. I feel sometimes these issues are overblown. I wouldn’t comment on it because we keep making our cinema anyways. I think both censors and cinema have to find ways to co-exist. They are there to keep us in check and we are there to push their limits. (Read: Wasn’t happy with special effects in ‘Ghayal Once Again’: Sunny Deol)

Ques: It’s been a long time since we have seen you in a patriotic film. Anything on cards soon?

Sunny Deol: I have always been a proud Indian. As far as a patriotic film is concerned, it depends if there is a subject like that but I have always played characters which are positive and someone who should never give up if he is fighting for the truth.

Ques: You still look so fit and fabulous. What is the secret?

Sunny Deol: (Smiles) I really don’t know. I don’t have any vices like drinking. I always get up early in morning and workout and this has been my way of life.

Ques: Finally tell us when will your son Karan make his Bollywood debut?

Sunny: This will definitely happen. But it is too early to talk about my son.

Tabu, Fitoor, Abhishek Kapoor, Tabu in Fitoor, Tabu upcoming Film, Tabu Fitoor, Tabu Fitoor Look, Katrina Kaif, Aditya Roy Kapoor, Aditi Rao Hydari, Lara Dutta, Rahul Bhatt, Entertainment news Abhishek Kapoor said, “Fortunately, Tabu was available at that time and she came onboard. She read the script and liked it immediately. We have known each other for many years.”

After Rekha’s abrupt exit from Abhishek Kapoor’s “Fitoor”, Tabu came onboard immediately and the director says he is fortunate that the “Haider” star believed in him completely.

Tabu was roped in to play the role of Begum in the film, based on Charles Dickens’ celebrated love story “Great Expectations”, at the last minute.

“Fortunately, Tabu was available at that time and she came onboard. She read the script and liked it immediately. We have known each other for many years.

“Someone else would have taken a lot of time to prepare for the role. I have to give it to Tabu for coming onboard and trusting us so easily and stepping into the film,” Abhishek told PTI.

The upcoming movie will see her portraying a character inspired by eccentric Miss Havisham while Katrina Kaif is playing Firdaus, which is modelled on beautiful but cold Estella. Aditya Roy Kapur’s Noor is based on Pip, an orphan.

The setting of Kashmir and Tabu’s avatar of a complex mother may have reminded people of Vishal Bhardwaj’s insurgency drama “Haider” but Abhishek says his film has nothing common with the Shahid Kapoor starrer.

“I don’t think there is anything similar in ‘Fitoor’ apart from Tabu and Kashmir. Both the films are very different. ‘Fitoor’ is a love story. ‘Haider’ was a political film.”

The “Rock On” director, who is returning behind the camera after a gap of three years, termed Rekha’s exit “unfortunate” and said he hopes to team up with the veteran actress in future again.

“It was very unfortunate that we had to part ways. It was a mutual decision. We were working on it very enthusiastically and we came to a point where we were shooting and we realised that we were not seeing things in the same way. We felt that this is not the film we should work on. May be there is something else that will come.”

Also starring Aditi Rao Hydari and Rahul Bhat, “Fitoor” hits theatres on February 12.

Actor Uday Tikekar, who will be seen in the forthcoming TV show “Krishnadasi”, says he loves playing a baddie in TV serials as the character never dies unlike in films.

“I love playing a strong negative character in a serial because the character never dies. In films the negative character are called for two three scenes,” Uday told IANS.

The actor will be seen playing an authoritarian character named Pradyuman Vidyadhar Rao, an uncrowned king of a village, in the Colors’ programme “Krishndasi”, a remake of a Tamil series based on India’s ancient Devadasi system.

Uday, who has played a negative role in a string of small screen shows like “Meet”, “Manzilein Apani Apani”, “Love Story” and Marathi serial titled “Abbhaan”, feels that there is a lot of “variety” in the negative genre as well.

Asked why he only prefers playing a negative personality onscreen, he said:
“I feel there is a lot of play for an actor in that (negative) category. There is a lot of variety in negative roles…I think in my case people have loved me as a negative character”.

“If people love me for what I am doing onscreen then why not?” said the actor who played Ileana D’Cruz’s father in the 2012 released film “Barfi!”.

He will also be seen on the silver screen in upcoming movies like “Rocky Handsome,” directed by Nishikant Kamat, Shah Rukh Khan starrer “Raees” directed by Rahul Dholakia and Irrfan Khan starrer “Madaari” by Kamat again.

The brothers of Neerja Bhanot — the flight attendant who sacrificed her life while saving passengers from terrorists on board a hijacked flight in 1986 — are said to be happy with the way “Neerja”, the forthcoming Bollywood biopic on their sister, has turned out.

Her brothers, Akhil and Aneesh, had even proudly presented the film’s trailer at an event in Mumbai. And they were also happy upon being shown some glimpses from the film, which stars Sonam Kapoor as Neerja Bhanot.

“The makers of ‘Neerja’ showed Akhil and Aneesh Bhanot glimpses of the film. The brothers were very happy with the end result and were of the opinion that all incidents have been portrayed in a realistic manner,” said a source associated with the makers of the movie.

“Neerja” tells their sister’s heroic tale of saving 359 passengers from terrorists on board the hijacked Pan Am Flight 73 in September 1986.

During the pre-production phase of the film, the makers had received consent from Neerja’s family to proceed with the film. However, a condition was laid to honour her spirit.

Directed by Ram Madhvani and produced by Fox Star Studios and Bling Unplugged, “Neerja” will release on February 19.

Pressure mounts on Chris Rock to quit as Oscars host

Amid the ongoing diversity row at this year’s Oscars, some artistes have called upon host Chris Rock to bow out of the ceremony.

R&B singer-songwriter Tyrese Gibson and rapper 50 Cent have urged Rock to step down.

“There is no joke that he can crack. There is no way for him to seize the moment and come into this thing and say, ‘I’m going to say this and say that I’m going to address the issue but then I’m still going to keep my gig as the host.’ The statement that you make is that you step down,” Gibson told People magazine.

50 Cent took to Instagram to write, “Chris please do not do the Oscars awards. You mean a lot man, don’t do it. Please.”

However, there are voices within the community which feel that Rock should stick to hosting the February 28 gig and use the stage to talk about the lack of inclusion in the awards nominations for a second consecutive year.

Filmmaker Spike Lee, who was one of the earliest voices to criticise the Academy body, wrote on Instagram that he and his wife Tonya Lewis Lee “cannot support it (Oscars)” and will skip the event.

Lee further said, “The host is black (Chris Rock) and now black actors and others are shaming him for taking the job? He earned it.”

Jada Pinkett Smith, also boycotting the ceremony, sent her good wishes to Rock for the mega event.

“Hey, Chris. I will not be at the Academy Awards and I won’t be watching but I can’t think of a better man to do the job at hand this year than you, my friend,” the Gotham actress said. “Good luck.”

Rock is yet to respond on the matter though he did comment on the diversity issue tweeting last week, “The #Oscars. The White BET Awards.”

The Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs has acknowledged the problem in a rare and lengthy statement saying swift reforms were needed to change the status quo.

“While we celebrate their extraordinary achievements, I am both heartbroken and frustrated about the lack of inclusion. This is a difficult but important conversation, and it’s time for big changes.”

The Academy has been accused of failing to nomination black talents in its four acting categories for the second year in a row. The case is similar in the directing category, prompting sharp criticism from Hollywood stars like George Clooney, Lupita Nyong’o, Smith, Lee and David Oyelowo.

As a storm of support gains a momentum of epic proportions post her much talked and tweeted about interview on television recently, Sunny Leone eases back and sounds the way she always does, calm and composed.

“Journalists ask all kinds of questions, and those who know me, know that I am a calm person and would enver let somebody get the best of me,” she connects for a quick chat from Mumbai.

Still ‘digesting’ the turn of events, Sunny Leone confesses she was pretty surprised with the support from the industry. “I thought it would go in the opposite direction, because sitting there, giving that interview on news channel, I have honestly never felt so alone and upset, with no one to protect me or help me. Women are intuitive creatures, and I had the feeling of where the interview was heading, and that he wanted to elicit a response that would make me sad, angry or feel bad about the choices I’ve made. I wasn’t going to back down or let him make me a victim,” says Sunny Leone who, at that moment was worried whether she’d given the right answers or was informative enough.

While Laila is an over-the-top me, glamourous, open minded, confident girl, Lily is the dorky nerdy twin who wears spectacles, has a bad haircut and stutters.” It’s a film she wanted to do purely because she wanted to explore comedy after Ragini MMS.

The fact that it’s an adult comedy replete with double entendres doesn’t perturb Leone. “I don’t understand why comedies are not looked at as performance oriented roles. For instance Jennifer Aniston looked wow in one of my favourite movies, Meet the Millers. She is sexy, smart and funny, and that’s what counts.”

Here’s a performing artist and astute businesswoman who maintains a zen-like persona, is at ease with her identity and feels no heat from other leading ladies.

According to Zaveri, who commented in an Indian Express interview ‘she is an A-lister who can give him a opening of Rs 9 crore on day one.’ According to Leone, there are no categories or boxes to tick mark, everything has to have one element – entertainment. “I did Mastizaade because it is genuinely funny. Also, I take up projects only when I am comfortable with the people I am working with, people who have a sense of humour and are open minded.”

When it comes to the adult genre, its existence doesn’t shock Leone. “Why can’t we have an adult genre? What is wrong with it? Why can’t adults have a night out without the kids and see a film or programme made for them? This is an age group who is smart enough to understand the difference between right or wrong, fiction and non-fiction, but unfortunately, we all get caught in different views. The bottomline is, if you don’t like it, don’t watch it.”

This year, Leone will also be seen in two serious films, One Night Stand and Baimaan Love. With the industry, that at one time was quite wary of an adult star among them, now waving a ‘shining Sunny’ flag, Leone smiles and says, “I am my biggest competition for this is my life and my journey alone.”

“Rangoon”, a period love triangle starring Saif Ali Khan, Shahid Kapoor and Kangana Ranaut, will release on September 30.

The film, which is produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, Vishal Bhardwaj and Viacom18 Motion Pictures, will have Gulzar as the lyricist. Bhardwaj is also the director and musician behind the movie while Gulzar has written the lyrics.

Bhardwaj’s last two cinematic outings “Haider” and “Talvar”, which he produced, were critically and commercially successful.

Since both the movies released in the Gandhi Jayanti week of October 2, the makers decided to continue the tradition by opting for the Gandhi Jayanti week.

Not much is known about “Rangoon” other than that it is set during the World War II.

Kangana had called it a passionate love story.

“It is a film which is set in the 1940s during the World War II. It is about three characters and one of them is a superstar and her mentor, who she is romantically involved with. Another one is a soldier. It is about INA, independence and so many other things. It is a very passionate love story,” Kangana had said during an interview.
