Hollywood stunt coordinator Dan Bradley has done a great job in “Ghayal Once Again”, according to actor-director Sunny Deol.

“In my earlier films, my action used to always be good, the screenplay also used to be believable. I needed to bring in Dan Bradley because he’s famous for the films that he has made, ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’ and many others which all have seen, and he has really done a great job. We gelled very well,” Sunny Deol said at the second trailer launch of the film on Thursday.

Bradley has worked in films such as the “Spiderman” series, “Superman Returns”, “Quantum of Solace” and “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” among others.

“The awareness of the film has increased and our song ‘Lapak Zhapak’ has caught on with the youngsters,” he said.

Airlift music review: Overall, the album is marred with quite a bit of musical conservatism

airlift, soch na sake, arijit singh, akshay kumar, nimrat kaur, music review The tunes of Akshay Kumar and Nimrat Kaur starrer Airlift has been able to woo many hearts.

Amid an onslaught of generic songcraft that’s thrown at us from various sides, another a slightly-above-average album comes to the fore. The tunes of Akshay Kumar and Nimrat Kaur starrer Airlift, which are getting much airtime these days with syrupy strings in tow, are just about alright. That said, the album does deliver the average with much panache and refrains from any kind of din.
Soch na sake by Arijit Singh is a soft romantic melody with acceptable levels of saccherine. The guitar interlude paired with a tabla, which gives the piece pace for a while and stops in a few seconds to come back easy breezy pace, is one of the more interesting bits in the song. The second interlude is on the piano. Only jarring note in this song is Tulsi Kumar’s oddly thin, child-like voice, which turns a decent melody into a sugar festival. Singh’s solo version is much better. The song, however, has been adapted from B Praak and Hardy Sandhu’s Punjabi song, Soch. A rabab prelude seagues into shehnai made to sound Middle-eastern for Dil cheez tujhe dedi and plagiarises heavily from famous pop of the ’90s — Didi by Khaled. The song, however, does have a catchy hook and is likely to be a club favourite in the days to come.
Mera nachan nu is an average Punjabi composition, kept afloat only because of Divya Kumar’s brilliant vocals. One spots fascinating levels of sincerity in Tu bhoola jise sung by KK. An anthemic yet ordinary piece, it opens with a mix of trumpets, guitars and some drums, followed by KK’s voice with just a guitar. The song later layers Indian national song Vande Matram with the song, which sounds like an interesting idea on paper, but the execution is nothing to write home about.

Overall, the album is marred with quite a bit of musical conservatism, and the lyricist and composers haven’t gone beyond the tried and tested, resulting in tunes that are pleasing sometimes but ones that certainly don’t linger.

Airlift, Kya Kool Hain Hum 3, Airlift vs Kya Kool Hain Hum 3, Akshay Kumar, Nimrat Kaur Airlift Vs Kya Kool Hain Hum 3: It’s double bonanza for viewers as they get to savour two diametrically opposite films.

The first big clash of 2016 at the box-office begins this Friday (January 22) with Akshay Kumar’s thrilling drama Airlift locking horns with Ekta Kapoor’s adult comedy, Kya Kool Hain Hum 3. It’s double bonanza for viewers as they get to savour two diametrically opposite films.

With Airlift, Akshay Kumar will be touching upon a real story of middle east never told before in Indian cinema. The movie will showcase the largest civil evacuation in the world when Indian government rescued lakhs of Indians stuck in Kuwait that had turned into a war zone after Saddam Hussein mounted missile attacks giving rise to the Gulf war. Air India operated multiple flights daily flying in and out of Kuwait for months thereby evacuating all stranded Indians. The operation was kept quite discreet and till date not many know the intimate details of the same.

Airlift will give for the first time ever a detailed glimpse of how the entire operation was pulled off deftly by the government. Apart from the riveting storyline, it will also be interesting to see how Akshay pulls off this real life drama. Khiladi Kumar has always tasted success during the Republic day weekends at the box-office. His pairing with Nimrat Kaur will be another thing to watch out for. (Read: ‘Kya Kool Hain Hum 3’ not trying to degrade Rajshri films: Aftab Shivdasani)

On the other hand, Kya Kool Hain Hum 3 will bring back memories of Grand Masti. The adult comedy that has Tusshar Kapoor and Aftab Shivdasani in the lead roles is loaded with sexual innuendos, bikini clad women and lots of other double entendre. Billed as a porn-com, Kya Kool Hain Hum 3 promises to be a no holds barred affair if one were to go by the bold trailers. It remains to be seen how much of adult content has been allowed by the censor board in the final print. (Akshay Kumar’s ‘Airlift’ to release across 70 screens in Middle East)

While Akshay Kumar’s Airlift is expected to attract the multiplex audience, Kya Kool Hain Hum 3 is certain to make a killing in single screen theatres. It remains to be seen which one will rake in more moolah.

Will Smith, wife Jada Pinkett-Smith to boycott Oscars in diversity protest

Will Smith, Jada Piknett Smith, Oscars, Oscars so white, Oscars boycott Will Smith on Oscars boycott: “My wife’s not going… We’ve discussed it. We’re part of this community. But at this current time, we’re uncomfortable to stand there and say this is OK,” Smith told ABC television’s “Good Morning America.”

Will Smith on Thursday (January 21) joined director Spike Lee and his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith in not attending the 2016 Oscar ceremony in February in protest over the absence of nominated actors of color, while nominee Mark Ruffalo said he will attend the show after confusion over his stance.

Will Smith, star of football head trauma movie ‘Concussion,’ was the highest-profile black actor to be snubbed by Oscar voters when nominees were announced last week. No actors of color were nominated in any of the 20 acting categories for a second straight year.

“My wife’s not going… We’ve discussed it. We’re part of this community. But at this current time, we’re uncomfortable to stand there and say this is OK,” Smith told ABC television’s “Good Morning America.”

Ruffalo, who is white, is a best supporting actor nominee for playing an investigative journalist in Catholic Church abuse probe “Spotlight.”

After some confusion over whether he would join the protest, the actor said on Twitter he will be at the Oscars “in support of the victims of clergy sexual abuse and good journalism,” but that he did support those not attending in protest.

Lee, Smith, Pinkett-Smith and documentary director Michael Moore are the only major stars so far to announce they will not attend the Oscars.

Their protest has sparked a major debate over the lack of diversity both at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, whose majority white male members vote on the Oscars, and in Hollywood at large.
Smith said that both times he had previously been nominated for an Oscar, he had “never lost to a white person.”

“When I see this list and series of nominations that come out – and everybody is fantastic and that’s the complexity of this issue, everyone is beautiful and deserving and it’s fantastic – but it feels like it’s going the wrong direction,” he said.

Lee on Wednesday said he had never used the word “boycott” to characterize his protest.

Oscars host Chris Rock has made no public statement on the issue, but has also come under pressure from rapper 50 Cent and “Fast & Furious” actor Tyrese Gibson to quit.

“There is no joke that he can crack. There is no way for him to seize the moment and come into this thing and say, ‘I’m going to say this and say that I’m going to address the issue but then I’m still going to keep my gig as the host,’ ” Gibson told People magazine. “The statement that you make is that you step down.”

Jugni movie review, two and a half stars

Jugni movie review, Jugni, Jugni review Shefali Bhushan’s debut feature Jugni has a documentary feel to it, which is natural, given her experience with being a collator and collector of folk sounds around the country.

Music is a great leveller, and can bring different people together. That thought is at the heart ‘Jugni’, a film that twines a tale of romance around the traditional Punjabi folk-song style (of the same name), used rousingly through the narrative in a way that has your head nodding to the beat.

Shefali Bhushan’s debut feature has a documentary feel to it, which is natural, given her experience with being a collator and collector of folk sounds around the country. But it works for the realistic grain of the film. I absolutely loved the music: such a pleasure to find a match between the milieu and the music, composed-scored-and-sung by such disparate but uber-talented acts like A R Rahman, Vishal Bhardwaj, and Clinton Cerejo.

Fittingly, music finds its way into the plot in an organic way : want-to-be music director Vibhavari aka Vibs (Sugandha Garg) comes looking for a fresh sound to rural Punjab, and lucks into Bibi Saroop (Sadhana Singh) and Mastana (Sidhant Behl), a duo that sing together in village gatherings. Mastana also has a solo act, which involves the sort of performance which goes down well with local audiences : hamming, swaying, jousting, but at the end of it, singing, always singing.

Vibs’ arrival changes the rhythms of everyone she comes in contact with: Mastana, who lights up the make-shift stages he prances upon, his tuneful mother, who is the repository of old lyrics and expert renditions, his fiery lady love (Anurita Jha) who knows him better than anyone else. Vibs’ own relationship with boyfriend-back-in-Mumbai (Sameer  Sharma) is also in a flux, and we see her moorings become fragile.

‘Jugni’ works best when the characters are singing: Sidhant Behl pours his soul into his singing, making us believe, completely, in his Mastana : a bluff yet sensitive human in search of a life beyond the ‘ganne ke khet’ used for trysting with his lover. He is terrific. Garg is good too. As are the other characters. The film turns clunky in other places, the first-time inexperience showing, but we don’t really mind, because it has that rare thing : a soul, and of course, song. I came out humming.

With his candid confessions on how he was “effeminate as a child” and how he used to have “sleepless nights” over the issue, Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar stole the show on the first day of the Jaipur Literature Festival which began in Jaipur, on Thursday (January 21).

Talking about his book “An unsuitable Boy” at a session with Shobhaa De and his biographer Poonam Saxena at the front lawns at Diggi Palace, where the festival is being held,  Karan Johar said: “I hated the word ‘Pansy’ and I was called that as a child. I was effeminate as a child and I used to have sleepless nights over the fact that I am different from other children.”

He said his parents were a big support system.

“Even when I weighed 150 kg, my mother said I was the best looking child in the world and my father told me that once I lost a little puppy fat, I can be a hero in Hindi films,” said Karan Johar.

Asked about the negative portrayal of homosexuals in his movies, Johar said he was the first Bollywood director who discussed the issue in films.

“Whether its ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’ or ‘Dostana’, I discussed the issue in the mainstream. I received so many letters from youngsters saying that my movies helped their parents identify their sexuality.

“Now there are so many films on LGBT and I am proud that I started it,” he said.

Johar also spoke about the hard times his family faced.

“When my father had a few flop movies, we had to sell our jewellery and house. He was not invited for launch parties and it was terrible times,” he said.

The director also spoke on rumours of a rough patch in his friendship with actor Shah Rukh Khan.

“Like every relationship, there have been ups and downs. However, Shah Rukh’s family is part of my family.”

According to the director, his best film was “Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna”, and the least favourite was “Student Of The Year”.

“However, it gave three good actors for Bollywood,” he said.

While cricket is almost considered a religion in India, it is often tagged by many as a “male dominated game” and to change this perception, Star Plus has launched its new offering “Tamanna” in Mumbai.

The show will feature the unconventional tale of an aspiring women cricketer, who travels through different phases in her life to achieve her goals.

Featuring Anuja Sathe as the protagonist Dharaa Solanki, “Tamanna”, which starts on February 1, is a finite series that is touted to challenge the mentality that people that a woman’s dreams come with an expiry date.

“I don’t know why cricket is seen as a male dominated game. There is no expiry date to a woman’s dreams – that’s what the aim of this show is,” Ajinkya Deo, producer of the show, said at the launch.

“There is no big difference in ‘Tamanna’ as compared to other shows. But what sets it apart is its concept. While we see a lot of ‘saas-bahu’ talks in other soap opera, these conversations will be less in ‘Tamanna’,” Deo said.

Apart from Anuja, “Tamanna”, which has been shot across various locations in Gujarat and Mumbai, will also feature Ketki Dave, Kiran Karmarkar, Harsh Chhaya and Vishal Gandhi among others.

As cricket plays a big part in the storyline of “Tamanna”, the show was launched in a unique style where a friendly match was organised between the stars of the show and media persons.

Kiran, best known for his roles in shows like “Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii” and “Uttaran”, said: “I don’t think many of us know how many women cricketers are there. We can’t even name one of them even when we know Saina Nehwal (Badminton player) and Sania Mirza (Tennis player). Every person has the right to live up to his or her dreams. Still very few girls get a chance to fulfill their dreams.”

Talking about her role of Dharaa, Anuja told IANS: “It is a character which I can relate myself to. Though she is simple and belongs to a middle class family, at the same time she is strong and has an unconventional dream of becoming a cricketer.”

Anuja, who has previously worked in few Marathi shows, is making her Hindi TV debut with “Tamannna”.

“I am nervous about getting in front of the national audience. I have worked for six years in Marathi television. But this show is the biggest of all,” she said.

“Tamanna” is said to be an inspiration for those women who feel that their dreams end after marriage and motherhood.

Actor Sunny Deol said that sharing screen space with his father Dharmendra and his son Karan, who is all set to make his Bollywood debut, will be a beautiful thing.

The 58-year-old actor said that he, Karan and Dharmendra would love to work together provided there was a good script.

“Why not? If there is a good script then we would love to work together. I would love this to happen as it will be beautiful. You have to do correct (sic),” Sunny said at a promotional event of his directorial venture ‘Ghayal Once Again’.

Sunny, however, preferred not to reveal details about Karan’s debut.

“In 2016, I will launch my son but I will not talk about it in detail now,”he said.

The ‘Gadar’ star has no tips to offer to his son but insists that he wanted him to do what he liked.

“I don’t give tips to anyone. He (Karan) has grown up with us in the house. He knows what has to be done and what not to be done. As a father, I try to support him in whatever he does.

“I always tell him to do what he wants to and not what I want him to do. Because, I did what I wanted to and that is how life should be,” he said.

He said neither his father Dharmendra nor brother Bobby will do a cameo in ‘Ghayal Once Again’, a sequel to his 1990 blockbuster ‘Ghayal’.

On Dharmendra promoting his film, Sunny said, “Dad loves you all (media). I will have him along with me soon. Next time definitely he will be there. He wants me to be there in front. Otherwise dad, Bobby and we all are together,” he added.

‘Ghayal Once Again’ is slated for release on February 5.

Sunny said that Dharmendra had seen some portions of the film.

“He has seen bits and pieces. He has liked it. There are some creative points that we are discussing. I cannot talk about it. He is feeling positive about it,” the actor said.

For Sunny, the ‘Ghayal’ sequence is a acid test.

“This is my acid test as after this I will come to know from the audience what to do next. There are lots of things in my mind but it’s too early to talk about them,” he added.

Colin Firth has paid a heartfelt tribute to his late “Love Actually” co-star Alan Rickman, revealing he has always been “in awe” of the actor.

Rickman lost his battle with cancer last week and his peers, friends and castmates have been offering up fond farewells for days.

“I’ve always been a little bit in awe of Alan because he’s always been incredibly solicitous of me,” he said in a statement.

“I wasn’t long out of drama school when I first met him. I was quite green and unsure of myself. He seemed to have an instinct for people who were in need of guidance of some kind. This is something I noticed in him in all the contact I’ve had with him over 30 years. He looked out for people.”

“We would run into each other at friends’ houses. It just kept happening. I actually found myself calling him for advice for things. I just felt he was the right person to ask for those sort of things.”

Actress Brie Larson says her sudden rise to fame is “totally outside of my comfort zone”.

The 26-year-old actress has been nominated for an Oscar for her role in “Room”.

“Every single step of this last year has been a completely new experience and one that is totally outside of my comfort zone.

“Room” tells the story of a young woman kept locked away by a captor, with only her young son, whose father is the kidnapper, for company.

While there are some drastic differences between her life and that of her character, Larson added that she finds the idea of being held captive particularly applicable to her life right now.

“I can’t help but trip out about how similar my life is to ‘Room’. It’s me wanting to stay in my own little bubble and remain anonymous and invisible and at the same time needing to step up to this hand that I’ve been given.”
